WORLD WATER DAY 22 March 2007
“Coping with Water Scarcity“
“Our Islands with Water“
|
|
“Coping with Water Scarcity? is the theme for the United Nation’s World Water Day 2007, which is observed on 22 March each year. Global water use is increasing at more than twice the rate of population growth and more people than ever are learning first-hand about coping with water scarcity. Scarcity could mean an absolute shortage of water or lack of access to safe water supplies.
World Water Day emerged from the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in 1992 and the importance of water continues to be recognised, with the UN General Assembly proclaiming the years 2005 to 2015 as the
International Water for Life Decade.
As in previous years, the SOPAC and Live and Learn Environmental Education are organising the Pacific World Water Day campaign.
“Our Islands with Water? will be used as the Pacific theme. The theme provides a positive feeling and encourages people in islands to know that there is sufficient water available for all if the water resources are managed well. A white heron (hamoni) commonly seen stalking fish on reefs, the seashore and along rivers will be used as an icon for the awareness materials produced.
The following activities are envisaged under the theme “Our Islands with water?:
• Provide outlines for topical speeches for press releases or presentations;
• Development and dissemination of educational awareness material (student activity booklets and stickers) in the Pacific region;
• Organise TV and radio campaigns; and
• Organise a national event to mark the day.
We would like to acknowledge the support provided by Taiwan/Republic of China for this year’s campaign.
