Sustainable Use of Renewable Energy

Between 2000 and 2003, the South Pacific Community (SPC)external link has implemented the (Pacific Renewable Energy France Australia Common Endeavour PREFACEexternal link project in Tonga, Cook Islands, Vanuatu and Marshall Islands respectively. After implementation, the Japanese Embassy to Suvaexternal link, through the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariatexternal link, made available funding to SOPAC to evaluate and disseminate lessons learned from these projects.

Solar PV Evaluation of PREFACE project in Ha'apai, Tonga

SOPAC carried out an evaluation of a Solar PV project in the Ha'apai group in Tonga. The evaluation comprised of Energy Officials visiting the remote island households that were provided with Solar PV systems. After gathering of data thorugh interviews and technical monitoring, a discussion between the participants focused on how these type of projects can be set up in the most sustainable manner.

The study provided material for a study on the Economics of various Renewable Energy options for Rural Electrification

Wind Project Evaluation of PREFACE project in Mangaia, Cook Islands

On Mangaia, the most southern island of the Cook Islands, two Vergnet 20 kW wind turbines were installed. The objective of the project was to reduce the diesel consumption of the generators that provided electricity to the three villages on the island by an underground grid.

A sub-regional three day workshop was organised in Cook Islands late 2004. The aim of this workshop was for the participants to learn more about wind energy and to understand issues that determine the technical and economical sustainability of wind energy in a small island environment.

The findings resulted in an effort to further optimise the integration of the wind turbine with the diesel generator to maximise diesel savings.

The wind energy component of the Mangaia Power system experienced further problems and came to a complete stand-still in the course of 2006. A site visit to the island in April 2007 resulted in a feasibility study for the upgrade of the system, looking into refurbishing the wind turbines. This study is taking into account expansion of the future load demand and the further integration of the wind turbines in the power system.

Evaluation of PREFACE PV Project in Marshall Islands

An independent evaluation was carried out by the Pacific Islands Energy Policy and Strategic Action Plan PIEPSAP in 2005. Read more about the PIEPSAP activities in Marshall Islands.
