SOPAC and Digital Strategy
The Forum Leaders endorsed the Pacific Plan in October 2005 where the Pacific Regional Digital Strategy is an essential component of the Pacific Plan.
The Digital Strategy is based on the Communication Action Plan (CAP) and the Pacific Island Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Policy and Plan (PIIPP). It outlines priorities such as improving access to ICT, reducing costs and removing inappropriate regulatory environment. The Digital Strategy also listed objectives to address issues prevalent in Pacific Island Countries. To meet these objectives and realize the potential of ICTs in the Pacific, the approach of the Regional Digital Strategy is based on three Pillars; Country, Regional and Global.
The Council of Regional Organizations in the Pacific ICT Working Group (CROP ICT WG) in addressing regional strategies such as improved regional coordination and harmonization, leadership, promotion of usage of ICT within and to member countries, leadership and ICT education wanted CROP agencies to take a lead and coordinate regional supports for regional and local initiatives that contribute to the implementation of the Digital Strategy based on their expertise, experience and mandates.
Pacific Islands Applied Geoscience Commission (SOPAC) based on the overall objectives of the Digital Strategy where particular consideration has been given to the areas where SOPAC has a comparative advantage and has demonstrated its expertise and ability (see ICT Projects and Activities) as the most appropriate organization within the CROP to take a leading role. Based on its expertise and extensive experience SOPAC through a consultative process with the CROP ICT WG has identified the following areas where it can play a leading and coordinating role at the regional level:
Furthermore SOPAC’s has the support of its Governing Council to be more actively involved in implementing the Pacific Plan and Digital Strategy.
