imageMereseini(Lala)Bukarau,Senior Adviser Technical - Publications, joined SOPAC in November 1985 as the documentalist! of the then UN/ESCAP Project, Mineral Prospecting in the South Pacific Offshore Areas. The support job responsibilities became too large in the late 80s as SOPAC's regional role expanded and moves had begun to change status from a UN Project to a self-governing regional organisation. At the splitting of the library and publications portfolios, Lala elected to go with the publishing. Alongside a Technical Editor, they developed and established the desktop publishing (DTP) capacity within the SOPAC Secretariat. She's since risen through the ranks, and is now responsible for the publishing output of the SOPAC Secretariat. She crossed the road from the Fiji Mineral Resources Department to come to SOPAC.
imageReuben Vulawalu, Project Officer II - Publishing/Graphic Arts, joined SOPAC in July 2001. He qualified as a graphic artist at the School of Printing of the Fiji Institute of Technology. SOPAC exploited the increased capacity afforded by advances in desktop publishing technology to up the volume of promotional and shorter byte-sized summaries of longer technical bodies of work to raise awareness within the SOPAC membership, of the applications of SOPAC technical work and know-how. Reuben's main task is to prepare these brochures at the DTP, and assist the Senior Adviser with other publishing tasks. He came to SOPAC from The Fiji Sun Ltd.
imageDorene Naidu, Library Services Officer, joined SOPAC in September 2004, following the departure of the long-serving Sunita Prasad. She came to us from the University of the South Pacific Library (with their blessing) where she had worked for seven years in various departments, including the Pacific Collection, and the Pacific Islands Marine Resources Information System (PIMRIS). She runs the SOPAC Special Geoscience Library. Dorene holds a Diploma in Library & Information Services from the University of the South Pacific.
imageElenoa Rokodi, Assistant Project Officer IV - Publishing/Library, joined SOPAC in February 2003. Her main task at the Secretariat is to continue the electronic capture of all past reports recording SOPAC Work Programme results. The scanning of paper copies of reports began in 1999; and at its completion the SOPAC Virtual Library will be up to date with all SOPAC reports, except restricted ones, accessible online. Elenoa came to SOPAC immediately upon completing her graduation work attachment at the Fiji Public Works Department for a computer fundamentals course.
