General Dialogue Information
The Dialogue on Water and Climate was aimed to improve the capacity in water resources management to cope with the impacts of increasing variability of the world's climate, by establishing a platform through which policymakers and water resources managers have better access to, and make better use of, information generated by climatologists and meteorologists.
It is now widely accepted that climate change will lead to an intensification of the global hydrological cycle and will have a major impact on regional water resources. It is also clear that, in many parts of the world, variability in climate conditions, next to many socio-economic and environmental developments, is already having major impacts and that such variability is increasing. Both present variability and long-term climate change impacts are most severe in the developing world, and particularly affect the poor in these regions.
Knowledge of variations in climatic patterns at different time scales and the human and ecological impacts is essential to the sustainable management of the World's fresh water resources. Through increasing awareness of the issues and of potential solutions, the dialogue also seeks to set in motion social and political processes that will lead to the eventual adoption of coping strategies and 'best practices'.
Major outputs
The major outputs of the Dialogue include:
- A universally accessible web-based knowledge base and information system;
- Guiding principles/tools for policymakers and water resources managers;
- Publicity and other materials for water managers to increase their awareness and understanding of the potential impacts of climate variability on water resources, ecosystems, and human health and poverty national and basin-level strategies;
- A synthesis report for the 3rd World Water Forum; and
- Preparations for contributions to the 3rd World Water Forum sessions.
The Small Island Countries Dialogue on Water and Climate
The Pacific and Caribbean region will be engaged in a Dialogue on Water and Climate led by the Water Resources Unit of the South Pacific Applied Geosciences Commission (SOPAC), the Unit for Sustainable Development and Environment of the Organization of American States (OAS), and the Caribbean Environmental Health Institute (CEHI). The following objectives are expected from the Small Island Countries Dialogue:
- Enhance public awareness
- Exchange views and experiences
- Develop political commitment to achieve improved policies, institutional frameworks, and approaches to adaptation
- Build capacity to address the challenge of climate change and variability in regard to water
- Promote inter-regional collaboration between small island countries of the Caribbean and the Pacific
