Work In Progress
PIEPSAP has commenced its operation on 16 August 2004. The Joint Regional Energy Meeting (REM 2004) and Pacific Islands Energy Policy and Strategic Action Plan (PIEPSAP) Consultative Meeting was convened from Monday 29th November to Friday 3rd December 2004 in Madang, Papua New Guinea. More updates on the REM 2004 on the following link: REM 2004
PIEPSAP has progressed well in 2005 and 2006. Government endorsed/approved work programs are in place now for Cook Islands, Fiji, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Niue, Palau, PNG, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Tuvalu. PIEPSAP's assistance covers energy policy development, establishment of regulatory frameworks, energy sector strategies and corporate plans. Increasingly, PIEPSAP also supports Non State Actors, power utilities and private sector initiatives in project development and strategic planning. With the Power Utility of Pohnpei, FSM a co-financing agreement is in place that covers the implementation of a model tariff study. The study is also supported by the US Department of Insular Affairs and the utility.
In 2005 and 2006 PIEPSAP has organised national consultations, surveys and workshops in 13 countries. PIEPSAP also participated in numerous regional and subregional activities which were targeted at raising the profile of energy in the region. The following overview shows the status of PIEPSAP work.
PIEPSAP is currently actively searching for support and co-funding to secure a second phase of the project. The following Concept Note describes a possible Phase II of the project.
