Kiribati

Ministry of Works and Energy, Kiribati has informally indicated assistance under PIEPSAP project with the Kiribati Energy Policy Guidelines and Issues, and Rural Electrification Policy.

Mr Gerhard Zieroth, PIEPSAP Project Manager, carried out stakeholder consultation with Kiribati from 1-4 November 2004.

Following Mr Zieroth's trip to Kiribati, the following needs were discussed:

  • Feasibility Study on the use of coconut oil as diesel fuel substitute;
  • Need to assess possible use of wind turbine on Christmas Island;
  • Need on addressing KOIL feasibility requirement for new tanks;
  • Study for MR fuel delivery venture as fuel supplier alternative option; and
  • Energy policy review requirements addressing national cross cutting issues.

Noting the above needs PIEPSAP has initiated discussions with Kiribati and other relevant parties such as Forum Secretariat.

Kiribati draft Work Programme is under preparation. As a follow up Mr Zieroth carried out consultations with Kiribati from 12 - 26 July 2005.

Biofuel trials with CNO currently under way in Kiribati, technical backstopping provided by PIEPSAP.

A National Biofuel Workshop “Towards greater use of coconut oil fuel in power generation and transport in Kiribati�? was carried out by PIEPSAP in Kiribati from 24-26 April 2006. Download workshop programme

National draft biofuel strategy developed and co-operation with neighboring Marshall Islands biofuel stakeholders established. Bio fuel analysis organized and funded.

Co-ordination with AusAid? on renewable energy study for Tarawa.

National policy development exercise prepared in co-operation with PIFS. Further PIEPSAP provides continued support for Biofuel program.

Participation in EDF 10 MCEP programming.
