STRENGTHENING THE FRAGILE PACIFIC ISLANDS ENERGY SECTOR - Addressing energy, economy and environment in a period of rapid change
Background
Following on from the Pacific Energy Minister's Meeting 2007 that was held in the Cook Islands, the Energy Ministers agreed that
"Energy is a key driver of economic growth with a significant bearing on education, environment, health and social welfare in Pacific nations. Energy and economic development need to be integrated and prioritized in national strategic development plans" and in managing an effective and efficient Pacific energy agenda, a further meeting would be valuable and propose to convene in 2009 in parallel with the Regional Energy Official's Meeting.
SOPAC is now organizing the Pacific Energy Ministers Meeting and related Regional Energy Officials Meetings 2009 that shares the theme
"STRENGTHENING THE FRAGILE PACIFIC ISLANDS ENERGY SECTOR - Addressing energy, economy and environment in a period of rapid change" and acknowledges the Kingdom of Tonga who will be hosting the PEM REMM 2009.

The proposed schedule for the meetings is as follows:-
• 20th – 22nd April, Regional Energy Officials Meeting (REM2009)
• 23rd April (am), Minister’s Briefing by their respective Energy Officials
• 23rd April (pm), Donor Agencies Meeting
• 24th April, Pacific Energy Ministers Meeting (PEMM2009)
Call for Abstracts - Case Studies & Technical Papers
SOPAC is calling for papers related to the sub-themes highlighted below to be presented at the Technical Session of the Regional Energy Officials Meeting (REM) 2009.
The technical session of the REM 2009 seeks to generate the exchange of information on how the fragile PICs energy sectors have and can be strengthened by addressing critical energy issues. This will contribute to the formulation of recommendations for presentation to the Pacific Energy Ministers Meeting (PEMM2009). Key sub-themes include:
• Energy, Climate Change & Environment
• Renewable Energy Technologies
• Petroleum Bulk Procurement
• Energy Efficiency, Conservation & Demand/Supply Side Management
• Energy Economics, Policies & Legislations
• Energy, Social Impacts & Gender
Abstracts are to be submitted to SOPAC by Friday, 12th September 2008 and it is advised that the attached Abstract Outline is adhered to:
