PACIFIC ENERGY MINISTERS MEETING and related REGIONAL ENERGY OFFICIALS MEETING 2009
20th - 24th April 2009
STRENGTHENING THE FRAGILE PACIFIC ISLANDS ENERGY SECTOR - Addressing energy, economy and environment in a period of rapid change
Background
Following on from the Pacific Energy Minister's Meeting 2007 that was held in the Cook Islands, the Energy Ministers agreed that
"Energy is a key driver of economic growth with a significant bearing on education, environment, health and social welfare in Pacific nations. Energy and economic development need to be integrated and prioritized in national strategic development plans" and in managing an effective and efficient Pacific energy agenda, a further meeting would be valuable and propose to convene in 2009 in parallel with the Regional Energy Official's Meeting.
SOPAC is now organizing the Pacific Energy Ministers Meeting and related Regional Energy Officials Meetings 2009 that shares the theme
"STRENGTHENING THE FRAGILE PACIFIC ISLANDS ENERGY SECTOR - Addressing energy, economy and environment in a period of rapid change" and acknowledges the Kingdom of Tonga who will be hosting the PEM REMM 2009.
