Objectives of the CDM
- Contribute to sustainable development in developing countries, by promoting the transfer of less carbon-intensive technologies and encouraging international investment.
- Assist industrialised countries in meeting their GHG emission limitation or reduction targets.
Examples of Possible Small-scale CDM Projects in PICs
- Small-scale renewable energy projects (e.g., the generation of electricity from hydro, wind or solar power, rather than from fossil fuels).
- Energy efficiency projects (e.g., improving efficiency in utility company power distribution systems, replacing light bulbs with more energy-efficient bulbs, improving the energy efficiency of appliances).
- Methane emissions recovery from landfills or agricultural activities.
- Fuel switching in industrial, commercial and residential uses (e.g., oil to gas).
- Transportation projects that reduce CO2 emissions.
- Reforestation and afforestation projects.
Examples of Registered Pacific CDM projects
As of May 2007, two CDM projects has been registered in PICs:
- the Lihr Geothermal Power Project in Papua New Guinea
