Tuvalu

Project Intervention Areas: All nine atolls especially Funafuti, the main atoll.

Key Result Area 1 - Sustainable development of coastal zones, in particular through identifying alternative sources of Aggregates

Activities completed
  • Bathymetric survey around all nine of Tuvalu’s atolls (2004).
  • The completion of a detailed hydrodynamic model of Funafuti Lagoon, Tuvalu utilising data acquired on marine surveys in 2004. Such models are useful for lagoon management and assessment of impacts of activities (such as aggregate extraction) within the Lagoon. It is anticipated that similar models would be completed in other intervention areas to address specific issues.
  • Surveys of bridge/causeway sites proposed for Vaitupu.
Activities in progress or ongoing..
  • Analysis of bathymetric and flow data gathered in Tuvalu - partial production of bathymetric maps.
  • Investigate saline incursion problems in Paluka Pits – all islands.
  • The compilation of beach profile data and spatial/temporal comparison of Funafuti coastlines based on scanned, rectified imagery and aerial photography was used to address stakeholder concerns regarding offshore dredging.

Key Result Area 2: Improved planning practices installed for safe and adequate water supplies and sanitation systems

  • Assistance provided to Tuvalu in the preparation of an integrated water project for the 2nd call under the EU Water Facility. This will assist with improving water storage capacity utilising borrow pits and address a number of disaster preparedness issues.

Key Result Area 3: Implement comprehensive hazard and risk management tools within the framework of an integrated, holistic approach for sustainable development (Island System Management)

Activities completed
  • Consultation with govt., NGOs and private sector on ISM model.
  • Review flooding problems of low lying areas, particularly around the Meteorology Office.

Key Result Area 4: ISM Infrastructure established and in use in each Country

Activities completed
  • Acquisition of imagery for all Tuvalu atolls.
  • Training and technical assistance with the rectification, interpretation and incorporation of remote sensed data into GIS.
  • Acquisition of relevant hardware and software and training in the use of appropriate cost-effective GIS systems .
  • Establishment and support of Tuvalu National GIS/RS data centre with international communication capabilities.
  • Training on Backdrop Production.
  • Training and technical assistance with the rectification, interpretation and incorporation of remote sensed data into GIS. Also Training provided for - MapInfo? Customisation. Assisted the Tuvalu Electricity Corporation (TEC) to establish a GIS/MIS system. On-going integration of the datasets inside the GIS/RS data centre with training of the stakeholders.
  • GIS Backdrops were produced for Tuvalu, required by the Aggregate section of the project to document the change of coastline during the last decades.
Activities in progress or ongoing..
  • Promotion of a GIS/RS data sharing policy which is open to a maximum of stakeholders.
  • On-going capacity building in ICT and specifically in running and maintaining the Tuvalu GIS/RS data centre.
  • On-going integration of the datasets inside the GIS/RS data centre with training of the stakeholders.

Key Result Area 5: Strengthening the capacity of Pacific ACP States

Activities completed
  • Ms Loia Tausi was appointed as Tuvalu Country Intern.
  • 1ST Multi-stakeholder Consultations conducted (National).
  • 2nd Multi-stakeholder consultations conducted (National).
