Solomon Islands

Project Intervention Areas: The central and eastern part of the north coast and offshore of the main island Guadalcanal, part of the west coast of Malaita, and Morovo Lagoon, New Georgia.

Key Result Area 1 - Sustainable development of coastal zones, in particular through identifying alternative sources of Aggregates

Activities completed
  • The marine survey conducted in Honiara (Iron bottom sand), Marovo lagoon, Noso and Ghizo island.
  • Aggregate assessment and related activities in Honiara and Ghizo were undertaken during a 3-week mission in July. Country Interns assisted in this field activity. The principal objectives of the mission were to carry out aggregate assessment and identify potential sources of sand and gravel in selected areas closer to Honiara; assess the extraction activities and the quality and quantity of sand along the East Lugger Shoreline in Guadalcanal; talk to key-stakeholders, especially developers, on the sources and extraction operation, and assess demand and supply of aggregates in areas around Honiara.
  • Rock samples that were collected from Ghizo Island, Western Province, were taken to the PWD Lab in Samabula, Fiji, for mechanical tests. The tests have been completed and results were made available to SOPAC. The development of the Proposed Guidelines for the Development and Management of Aggregates in the Solomon Islands is complete and will soon be presented in a workshop session.

Activities in progress or ongoing..
  • Develop a suitable development and management strategy (initiate ICM) for active sand and gravel extraction sites near Honiara ( in collaboration with relevant stakeholders).
  • Assess nearshore siltation issues – Marovo lagoon.

Key Result Area 2: Improved planning practices installed for safe and adequate water supplies and sanitation systems

Key Result Area 3: Implement comprehensive hazard and risk management tools within the framework of an integrated, holistic approach for sustainable development (Island System Management)

Activities completed
  • Consultation with govt., NGOs and private sector on ISM model.
  • Country Intern personnel visited Savo Island A from 31st March to April 1st 2005, to revive the routine monitoring of Savo volcano, which ceased in 1995. The temperatures measured at the different sites (coastal section and crater surrounds) reflect a consistent level of thermal and solfataric activity. Most temperatures reflect boiling or near boiling water temperatures, which are indicative of the normal trend of activity for this dormant volcano.

Key Result Area 4: ISM Infrastructure established and in use in each Country

Activities completed
  • Training on Backdrop Production.
  • Training and technical assistance with the rectification, interpretation and incorporation of remote sensed data into GIS. Also Training provided for - MapInfo? Customisation and Image Enhancing
  • A meeting was arranged between forestry and, geology and mines to discuss a joint initiative to map the water catchments, following the GIS/RS training course.
  • Country interns worked in-country on building the databases for water resources (catchment areas, rivers and boreholes information), prospecting areas, coastal zones and hazards mapping using MS Access, MAPINFO and ERDAS software for data storage, mapping techniques and images (backdrops, enhancements).
Activities in progress or ongoing..
  • Promotion of a GIS/RS data sharing policy which is open to a maximum of stakeholders.
  • On-going capacity building in ICT and specifically in running and maintaining the Solomon Island GIS/RS data centre.

Key Result Area 5: Strengthening the capacity of Pacific ACP States

Activities completed
  • Country interns appointed for Solomon Islands.
  • 1ST Multi-stakeholder Consultations conducted (National).
  • 2nd Multi-stakeholder consultations conducted (National).
