Papua New Guinea
Project Intervention Areas: The north coast of the main island west of Astrolabe Bay.
Key Result Area 1 - Sustainable development of coastal zones, in particular through identifying alternative sources of Aggregates
Activities completed
- Following a review of SWATH mapping needs in PNG, marine survey of Lae, Madang, Sissano and Vanimo areas was completed in 2006.
- The aggregates survey in Madang completed from 12th to 19th of June 2005. The Project provided funds for the logistics, fieldwork and sample tests, with survey completed in conjunction with the geo-hazard survey, by Jason Elemunop and Joe Buleka of the PNG Geological Survey. The survey, as requested by the developers, involved geological mapping and aggregate sampling concentrating on sand and gravel deposits from three rivers near Madang Town.
- West Sepik Province:Assessment of the aggregate resources in the Waramei River, south of Vanimo Townis is completed and Environmental Impact Awareness presentation delivered to stakeholders.
- Assessment of river aggregate resources in the Pual / Imbinis Areas, southeast of Vanimo Town. Aggregate assessment is completed and Environmental Impact Awareness presentation delivered to stakeholders.
Key Result Area 2: Improved planning practices installed for safe and adequate water supplies and sanitation systems
- A project proposal was drafted on rehabilitation of the hydrological monitoring network of the Ramu River (Papua New Guinea) for consideration under EDF8 or Pacific HYCOS.
- A reconnaissance visit was made to review KRA2 tasks within the three provincial centres of the Project’s intervention area within Papua New Guinea (Vainimo – Wewak – Madang).
Key Result Area 3: Implement comprehensive hazard and risk management tools within the framework of an integrated, holistic approach for sustainable development (Island System Management)
Activities completed
- Consultation with government, non-government organisations and private sectors on ISM model.
- Consultations with provincial governments and other stakeholders to identify risks to communities and appropriate ways to address these needs within available resources.
- A visit was made to the erupting Manam Island volcano and the evacuation care centres at Bogia in 2005. Census data and location readings of the care centres accommodating the victims of the Manam volcano eruptions were collected, producing a map (MapInfo) of the care centres with data links.
- Completed an assessment of river processes and sedimentation dynamics at Ramu-Brahminstation? bridge (Task PG 3.5.2) from 13th to 17th June 2005.
- In October/November 2005, a UPNG team and PNG Country Intern were at Vanimo to research into past Tsunami occurrences. Public Awareness and Tsunami education sessions were conducted targeting villages and schools, in the study area.
Activities in progress or ongoing..
- UPNG commissioned to undertake the Tsunami hazard assessment task (PG 3.5.3) of the NW coast Vanimo/Indonesia border.
Key Result Area 4: ISM Infrastructure established and in use in each Country
Activities completed
- Acquisition of relevant hardware and software and training in the use of appropriate cost-effective GIS systems.
- Establishment and support of National GIS/RS data centre in PNG with international communication capabilities.
- Training on Backdrop Production.
- Training and technical assistance with the rectification, interpretation and incorporation of remote sensed data into GIS. Also Training provided for - MapInfo? Customisation.
- The Country Intern began compilation of the Policies and Guidelines for use of spatial data and information, which was presented to the GIS User Group in February, for their consideration.
- Satellite image enhancement was utilised to assess and visualise the temporal change of the course of the Ramu River, which has been significant over the last few years. The results obtained demonstrated (i) a multi-temporal image showing the change of river course comparing three Landsat TM scenes and (ii) a new method of creating an interpretation key, allowing a clear interpretation of subtractive colour arrangement.
Activities in progress or ongoing..
- Promotion of a GIS/RS data sharing policy which is open to a maximum of stakeholders.
- On-going capacity building in ICT and specifically in running and maintaining the GIS/RS data centre.
- On-going integration of the datasets inside the GIS/RS data centre with training of the stakeholders.
Key Result Area 5: Strengthening the capacity of Pacific ACP States
Activities completed
- Mr Arnold Lakamanga appointed as the Country intern for Papua New Guinea.
- 1ST Multi-stakeholder Consultations conducted (National)
- 2nd Multi-stakeholder consultations conducted (National)
- Noting expertise available within country, work in PNG has attempted to utilize in country personnel wherever possible mobilized with the support of the project intern.
