SOPAC ICT PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES



ICT - An integral component

To achieve its mandated responsibilities SOPAC is implementing a Strategic Plan 2005 to 2009 and related annual technical work programmes comprising a suite of projects and activities which are supported by a wide range of development partners. Examples of projects and activities that are currently being implemented for which Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) are integral components include:
• SOPAC/EU EDF8&9 Reducing Vulnerability of Pacific ACP States.
• Pacific Island Energy Policy and Strategic Action Planning (PIEPSAP).
• Environmental Vulnerability Index (EVI).
• Regional Maritime Boundaries Delimitation and extended Continental Shelf initiative.
• Pacific Hydrological Cycle Observing System (Pacific HYCOS).
• Small Island Water Information Network (SIWIN).
• Pacific Islands – Global Ocean Observing System (PI-GOOS).


ICT Activities

As part of its responsibility to support and develop ICT capacity for its member countries SOPAC has:
• Developed and implemented GeoCMS (also referred to as the Mapserver) in 8 of 14 Pacific ACP States and intends to complete installation of GeoCMS in remaining eligible member countries by the end of 2007.
• Setup and/or provided support to Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in member countries like Tuvalu and Kiribati.
• Setup Country Code Top Level Domains (ccTLD) for Kiribati and Nauru.
• Redesigned Samoa’s backbone to allow multiple ISPs.
• Developed, implemented and supports LAN and WAN in member countries such as Government of Tonga Network (GOTNET).
• Developed a number of training courses both in-country and at a regional level in numerous fields such as GIS and Remote Sensing, Linux, GeoCMS and Network Administration.
• Implemented GIS and Remote Sensing systems including asset management systems.
• Assisted member countries with procurement, project design and management.
• Assisted member countries in acquiring and purchasing image data.

In this regard SOPAC continues to offer the mentioned ICT services to member countries.
