Background
Partnership Initiative
The Pacific Islands Energy for Sustainable Development (PIESD) partnership was launched at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in August 2002.
Through the Council of Regional Organisations of the Pacific (CROP) Energy Working Group (EWG) specific emphasis was placed on the development of a regional position paper for the energy sector, this was presented at the CSD9 in 2001. The regional paper was subsequently adopted by the EWG for the development of the Pacific Islands Energy Policy (PIEP) and endorsed by Energy Officials at the Regional Energy Meeting (REM) in Rarotonga in 2002. The PIEP document represents a regional consensus, affirmed at the 2004 REM in Madang, Papua New Guinea.
The main vision of both the partnership (PIESD) and the policy (PIEP) is the increased availability of reliable, affordable and environmentally sound energy for the Pacific Island Countries sustainable development.
The PIESD is one of several Type II partnerships in the field of Energy that was launched at the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) in April 2001. The PIESD cooperates with a number of Type II partnerships specifically focussing on Small Island Developing States (SIDS) through:
1. Improving the provision of sustainable energy services for SIDS with UNDP as the lead partner; and
2. Productive use of clean energy for sustainable development of SIDS with UNIDO as the leading partner.
