Pacific Energy and Gender Network (PEG)
About PEG PEG Activities PEG Resource PEG Announcements PEG Database PEG Workshop CD PEG Links

Pacific Energy and Gender Network (PEG) is a regional initiative to connect, inform and mobilize people and organizations committed to achieving gender equality in energy use.

PEG aims to become a dynamic network of women and men around the Pacific and internationally, towards a viable solution for the 'available, reliable, affordable, environmentally sound energy for sustainable development and gender equity for all Pacific Islanders'.

why gender in Energy

Many countries in the Pacific and the world have set a standard of differing roles and responsibilities for men and women according to the social forms of division of labour based on gender differentials.

Energy use by diverse gender groups is traced back from decades. There have been various interests in terms of gender access in subsistence economy where men tend to emphasize the benefits of saving money on energy costs while women tend to emphasize the benefits of better health and time savings.

how PEG started

As a follow-up to the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) workshop, held in Perth, Western Australia, June/ July 2001 and the Regional Energy Meeting held in Rarotonga, Cook Islands 2002, the South Pacific Applied Geoscience Commission (SOPAC) was mandated to assist in coordinating initiatives related to the development and implementation of an action plan for women and energy.

Endorsing the establishment of a Pacific Energy and Gender Network (PEG), the participants at the Regional Workshop ‘Gender, Energy and Sustainable Development’, 4 – 8 August, 2003 defined its mandate and scope as follows:

(i) That the region chooses to endorse and establish a regional gender and energy network, Pacific Energy and Gender Network (PEG).

(ii) That PEG Network includes and welcomes all countries, and all peoples and their organizations that have gender and energy interests in this Oceania region.

(iii) That the PEG Network becomes, through this workshop a strategy and action, in the Pacific Islands Energy Policy and Plan (PIEPP) in order to further gender equity and sustainable energy development in the region.

(iv) That this PEG Network is formally established through a coordinating ‘hub’ and initially is hosted by SOPAC.

(v) That the ‘hub’ or Secretariat for PEG Network exists as a separate function to the host organization with the option that the ‘hub’ of the network rotates throughout the region and be hosted by different organizations with suitably capacity.

(vi) That the PEG Network would welcome regional, national and community organizations to membership and would provide encouragement and opportunity for community based representatives.

(vii) That a small, representative working group be established, by this workshop that plans, oversees and is responsible for the operationalising of the PEG Network.

(viii) That the PEG Network through this workshop chooses to accept the invitation extended to the Oceania region to join the broad international gender and energy network known as ENERGIA.
